Summary on Grant Application Form |
Differing from all existing methods for modelling and identification of dynamic engineering systems, this proposal intends to establish a new modelling method and associated algorithms for the real-time operation and control of engineering systems. The proposed method performs system modelling by first establishing the 'eng-genes' - fundamental engineering functions from 'a priori' engineering knowledge. These 'eng-genes' are then composed and combined to produce a simple neural model. The 'eng-genes' reflect the nonlinearity uniquely existing within the specific engineering system, therefore it is natural to compose and code these 'eng-genes' and the associated neural structure into appropriate chromosome representations which then evolve for some generations to produce a neural model which best fits the dynamic system. The approximation performance of the proposed neural models will be analysed, and new off-line/ online modelling and identification algorithms will be proposed. User-friendly software will also be developed to implement this new modelling method. The proposed method, together with its associated algorithms and software will then be applied to various engineering systems. The major contribution will be a unique platform for effective genetic modelling of a wide range of complex engineering systems. This project will be carried out within Queen's University Belfast and it will last for three years. A postdoctoral research assistant will be employed to carry out a major part of this research and the total cost is 119,813.
