Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposal is a 5 year rolling programme to generate the critical mass necessary for the development of a world class maths/engineering/biology interdisciplinary Centre for Complex Systems. The Centre will exploit the increasingly blurred distinction between mathematics, statistics and computation, when analysing large complex systems, the properties of which reflect the structure of the system of components rather than the components themselves. Funding is for 5 three-year post-doctoral research assistants linked to 5 specific themes, namely: Modelling and analysis of multiple scale problems in engineering, physics and materials (A) ; Biological networks (B) ; Emergent behaviour in complex systems (C) ; Numerical algorithms for complex systems (D) ; and Highly structured stochastic systems (E) . A management and training structure is proposed that will promote interdisciplinary, encouraging the PDRAs to work across themes by applying ideas which have been developed for one set of problems in the context of another. This will be further enhanced through a programme of inviting about 30 academic visitors of international repute for two-monthly periods, and a further programme of 5 international workshops linked to the proposed themes.
