Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research addresses the capacity of systems in the building sector to adapt to climate change, making use of conceptual approaches recently developed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to characterise adaptive capacity. The consequences of climate change depend both on the nature of physical change and society's capacity to adapt. The work will be carried out alongside other EPSRC projects which are part of the Building Knowledge for a Changing Climate (BKCC) portfolio. These projects address urban drainage, urban planning, energy supply and demand, and the built heritage. The characterisation of adaptive capacity will be used to extend existing socio-economic scenarios developed under the UK Climate Impacts Programme so that the parallel projects will have a consistent basis on which to assess possible adaptive responses. The scenarios will consider four very different possible worlds using the 2020s and 2050s time horizons. The project will then integrate the socio-economic dimensions of the findings of the BKCC projects. As well as helping to consolidate the integration of the BKCC portfolio, the project will lead to methodological innovation in interdisciplinary research on climate change impacts and adaptation.
