China is the largest developing economy of the world and a huge potential market for UK industry and technology transfer. There are numerous opportunites for UK universities and companies to collaborate with partners in China. However, there have been concerns with the declining trend of such collaboration in recent years. Without turning the trend around, UK science might miss out opportunities of gaining significant benefits from such collaboration and the image of the UK as a leader of excellence in science and technology could also suffer in China. This proposal is motivated by the last visit of the Science Minister Lord Sainsbury to China to open the first UK-China Hi-Tech Forum and by the current EPSRC initiative to set up specific network programmes in collaboration with partners in China.This network proposal is aimed to establish a wide range of joint research programmes in automation, computing and manufacturing between UK and Chinese universities and research institutes. The initial membership includes 17 UK universities and over 30 Chinese universities and research institutes. The proposed network will allow the latest research ideas and theories to be shared for mutual benefits. The network will also support the development of multidisciplinary research programmes in a coherent manner.
