Summary on Grant Application Form |
My project concerns the study of integrable quantum field theory and its applications to condensed matter physics and statistical mechanics. Integrable quantum field theory comprises a set of methods, techniques and ideas that lead to exact calculations of physical quantities. Exact calculations are important: they allow us to make predictions and they help us in understanding physical mechanisms. Recently, new developments in integrable quantum field theory found applications to some condensed matter problems, such as the Kondo effect or currents through point contacts in quantum Hall systems. The latter application is an example of an important subject of condensed matter physics: nonequilibrium transport. I would like to find other nonequilibrium systems where we can do exactcalculations. This can give new insights into the whole subject of quantum kinetics. Another application that I find interesting is to the subject of statistical mechanics on a curved space. This subject is not very well studied: we don't know in general what happens to the standard description of statistical systems when they are put on a curved space. Its study could throw light on various aspects of statistical mechanicsand quantum gravity.
