The project goal is to develop a prototype system that provides clinicians and sonographers with high-quality 3D breast ultrasound imaging and improved visualisation and quantification tools to aid assessment and treatments of suspect masses and other soft tissue diseases of the breast. The ultrasound device will have a novel integrated acquisition and automated image analysis design and processing algorithms. Focal points of the research which will be fundamental to its success are careful design of the scanning cup acquisition system, the development of single and multiple image frame methods for breast mass detection and characterisation and methods for estimating and interpreting breast deformation under an applied load (palpation/vibration), and the integration of the acquisition and image processing tasks to minimise the effect of one on the other (a main limitation of previous work). The integrated system will undergo a clinical assessment, focusing on the use of such a device for assessment of asymptomatic women. If successful, a follow-on project would conduct a larger clinical trial.
