The control of the passage of electromagnetic radiation is of vital importance to engineers working with communication and radar technologies. The requirements for power to be absorbed, filtered, reflected, focused and channelled are becoming ever-more common in everyday devices and applications. Shielding in mobile phones to prevent radiation from penetrating the skull, automotive radar systems in road vehicles and the reduction of radar interference caused by reflections from large buildings at airports, are just a few of the technologies that will benefit from the proposed work. What makes many of the structures envisaged in this proposal different from existing technologies is their thickness, which is around one-hundredth of their operating wavelength, and there is scope for further reduction. The design of a device whose performance is completely independent the direction and polarisation of the incident beam is a key aim, as is an increase of their operational bandwidth.The proposed research and Fellowship will be undertaken at the School of Physics at the University of Exeter, making extensive use of the wide range of microwave equipment and computer modelling techniques already established. The total cost of the research grant (146765) includes a PhD studentship, mechanical workshop and computing support, and the purchase of a microwave amplifier to increase signal levels.
