Summary on Grant Application Form |
The union of photonics and biotechnology provides some of the most exciting scientific and commercial prospects for the 21st century. We will explore the use of light for both diagnostic purposes and as a powerful tool for manipulating material on cellular and sub-cellular lengthscales. We aim to bring together physicists, biologists, biochemists and medical scientists in St Andrews and Dundee to explore innovative applications of light in the life sciences. In particular we have identified a range of feasibility studies at both the cellular and molecular level that will provide scientifically interesting results and a foundation for future grant applications. These include exploring the use of light to control nerve cell growth, for cell sorting, as a means of studying protein structure, and as way of treating some cancers. We will also carry out a range of networking activities including a visitor programme for leading UK and international scientists and workshops for training and dissemination of results.
