This grant will establish new collaborations between internationally recognised research groups in Photonics at Heriot-Watt and Biological Sciences at Edinburgh University. The stimulus for the research stems from the needs of life scientists to obtain a deeper understanding of the structure and function of living biological systems at all levels, from individual molecules and cells to entire organisms. We seek to achieve this by developing new optical technologies to sense and image within living biological systems in a minimally intrusive manner. The two research groups recognise that the development of photonic solutions enabling ground breaking research in the biological sciences will only come to fruition by close collaboration between physical and life scientists, at all stages of the research. The biological applications encompass cell biology, biomolecular structure, biochemistry and biomedicine at Edinburgh University, and zoology through collaboration with Oxford University. Our collaborators in biomedicine are practising clinicians as we seek to develop photonic diagnostics that are directly relevant to clinical practice.
