This proposal examines a special class of polymer LEDs with small barriers to electron injection and relatively large barriers to hole injection and a high density of trap sites close to the hole-injecting contact. The presence of these traps redistributes the electic field away from the buk towards the anode/polymer interface, leading to a field free bulk. The redistribution of the electric field towards the anode/polymer interface improves (fielddependent) hole injection and leads to balanced carrier injection. This device structure represents the state-of-the-art in terms of polymer LED performance and there is considerable interest in understanding the nature of the trap states and the detailed operating principles of the devices. This proposal uses a combination of optoelectronic measurements (electromodulation spectroscopy, complex impedance analysis, Raman Imaging etc) to clarify the physics and chemistry governing device operation.
