Summary on Grant Application Form |
We have recently demonstrated a major advance in surface based self-assembly which links supramolecular organisation to nanostructure fabrication. In this work a hydrogen-bonded supramolecular assembly is used to template nanostructure formation on a semiconductor surface. We now propose a wide ranging programme to establish the design rules which control the dimensions, architecture and stability of related two-dimensional supramolecular arrays and investigate the range of materials which may be successfully templated into nanostructures such as quantum dots. This will be achieved through the design and synthesis of appropriate component molecules which will be processed into two dimensional assemblies through sublimation and will be investigated using scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).
