The aim is the development of software for the use of forensic scientists and other investigators to aid in the investigation and evaluation of scientific evidence, through the use of statistical modelling of the uncertainty in such evidence. Statistical modelling enables there to be a clear statement of underlying assumptions and of the conditioning for the probabilities. The main application will be evidence used for the detection and prosecution of trafficking in illegal materials,The research will be undertaken over a two-year period in The University of Edinburgh's School of Mathematics under the principal supervision of a statistician with research support from members of the Schools of Informatics and of Law. There will be collaboration with the Lothian and Borders Police Forensic Science Laboratory and the Scottish Drug Enforcement Agency.The cost will be just under 110K . This will cover the cost of a full-time researcher for two years and associated costs such as equipment and travel.The work relates well to other aspects of the EPSRC Programme on Technology for Crime Prevention and Detection. The same investigators on this project have already been awarded a research grant within the Programme to develop software for the investigation of crime scenarios. The group consisting of the three investigators and two research fellows will provide a strong nucleus for continuing research in these areas.
