Summary on Grant Application Form |
This research proposal is concerned with the development of a new adaptive control methodology for systems which are described by nonlinear partial differential equations (PDE's). These systems are infinite dimensional so in practice controller synthesis has to be based on finite-dimensional approximations. The applicability of current approaches is to a great extent limited to systems for which the PDE's are known in advance, up to a set of constant or time-varying parameters. Even when the PDE's are known, very often controller design leads to high dimensional controllers which are not implementable in real-time or do not achieve the required performance targets. This research program aims to overcome these difficulties by developing an adaptive control strategy which is based on reduced-order, finite-element models that can be estimated from data. Fast and efficient control algorithms, targeting reconfigurable computing platforms, will be developed in order to deal with the computational constraints normally associated with real-time implementations. This research program aims to address key technological needs in areas such as smart or controllable materials, chemical process control, active control of surface properties and fluid flows stabilisation, in cases when accurate mathematical models of the underlying process are not available.
