Summary on Grant Application Form
Recent research has demonstrated how fabricating and shaping magnetic materials on a nanometre scale allows them to perform functions previously associated with semiconductors. For example, magnetic 'nanowire' networks have been used to perform logic functions by propagation of magnetic 'domain walls', which separate opposite regions of magnetisation, around the nanowires. This proposed work addresses the great shortage of information on how domain walls propagate through magnetic nanowires under different conditions and how domain walls interact when they meet at nanowire junctions. These issues are of basic scientific interest and fundamental to the development of functional magnetic nanowire technology. New applications are expected to arise as a result of this research. This programme will be carried out within the Department of Physics, University of Durham and will involve several state-of-the-art technologies, such as nanotechnology fabrication, nanomagnetism and ultra-fast laser optics. The proposed research falls within the EPSRC's 'Nano World' research priority area and specifically with the identified areas of nanofabrication, magnetic materials and functional nanotechnology.
