This is a synthetic chemistry project which will develop molecular synthetic chemistry expertise as well as producing some interesting new molecules which are at the limits of current knowledge.We aim to develop the chemistry of strained disubstituted naphthalene rings. The 'natural' geometry is not readily achievable with heavier p-block elements in place and so these systems contain various degrees of ring strain. We shall synthesise a range of species with varying degrees of strain in order to assess the maximum possible strain. . These systems should also support unusual oxidation states and the unstrained distance is suitable for a one electron bond and the isolation of organo-phosphorus/organo-sulfur radicals will be attempted. This synthetic approach will make use of the ring strain relief energy.The naphE2 systems will also be used as starting materials for the synthesis of new organo-sulfur/selenium -nitrogen rings which will test theories on aromaticity and will themselves be tested in the synthesis of molecular materials (low D conductors, molecular magnets).
