Following exciting preliminary experiments, we propose to synthesise nanoparticles of indium nitride. One route to be explored is the controlled decomposition of an indium azide, or by other routes. The size distribution of the nanoparticles will be controlled by the synthetic procedure and by size selective precipitation. We shall use organic caps initially, but better light emitting properties may be obtained by making core-shell particles in which InN is capped by GaN. We propose to make particles Which luminesce at different wavelengths across the visible and near IR region of the specrum, the emission wavelength being controlled by particle size. Electron microscopy will be a major tool for characterising the particles and extensive studies of photo and electroluminescence will be carried out.Initial studies will be carried out on the use of these particles for electroluminescent devices and for fluorescence tagging in biological systems. these particles have the potential to be much more stable towards bleaching than currently used organic flurophores and much less toxic than CdSe, which is currently used for nanoparticle fluorescent tagging.
