Summary on Grant Application Form
The ability to identify and apply knowledge from textual documents is becoming an increasingly important requirement within commerce and research. Information Extraction (IE) is a technology which automates this process making it possible to query the massive bodies of text now held by organisations. We propose to build an IE system which can extract relations from natural language text. Examples of these relations include the names of people and the companies for which they work or the names of proteins and the molecules with which they interact. We shall employ novel techniques from the field of machine learning which will make the system highly adaptable and allow rapid porting to new domains and extraction tasks. These methods have only recently been aplpied to this problem and it is our intention to improve upon them by combining more than one source of linguistic kowledge. The system shall be evaluated on a number of tasks including a standard one in the IE field. An additional evaluation shall be carried out on biological texts to verify the system's portability.
