Summary on Grant Application Form |
This is a request for funding to support a 4 month visit to the Institute for Materials Research at the University of Leeds by Professor Jurgen Rodel of the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany. The visit is scheduled to take place between 1st April and 31st July 2004. Professor Rodel shares a common interest with the Professor Bell at Leeds in the properties of ferroelectric materials, however his background and experience are mostly complimentary to those of the Professor Bell. He made a short visit to Leeds during October 2003, during which a number of specific areas of common interest were identified. One of those areas it was felt could be addressed during the 4 month visit currently being planned whist the others would need the further consideration that the visit would also afford. Hence, the aims of the visit are three-fold: (I) for the Leeds Group to benefit from Professor Rodel's expertise in the characterisation and understanding of mechanical properties of ceramics especially that relating to ferroelectric materials (ii) for Professor Rodel to become familiar with a wide range of ferroelectric phenomena, theoretical approaches and materials being investigated in Leeds and (iii) to prepare for a more formal, long term collaboration between the groups in Darmstadt and Leeds.
