Summary on Grant Application Form |
The dynamics of co-flowing jets will be explored in a jet-noise context. Both experimental and numerical studies will be made. The main aim of the experiments is to record simultaneous acoustic signals and flow visualizations (PIV) of high-speed co-flowing jets. These will help identify the flow structures responsible for certain typical acoustic events and to better understand how noise-reduction devices actually work. PIV images and acoustic signatures will be compared with CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) images and their acoustic signatures. These comparisons will help give greater physical insight into noise-control processes. For the CFD, novel Zonal Large Eddy Simulation (ZLES) and non-linear LES approaches will be developed and then applied, Such approaches are probably better suited than pure LES to jets with co-flow. The computational aspect will extend Tucker's recent work and experience gained on a 9-month RAE Secondment to the Boeing Noise Group in Seattle. Both Rolls Royce and Warwick University are involved in an EU collaborative programme on coaxial jet noise prediction methods (CoJeN). A grant for the current proposal would allow fundamental supporting research to take place. This will greatly improve the outcome of the EU programme as well as supporting future such work carried out by QinetiQ and Rolls Royce.
