Summary on Grant Application Form |
A new incremental sheet forming process (ISF) is being developed at the University of Bath within the Innovative manufacturing Research Centre with a 3-year 198k grant. The ISF concept involves the use of a smooth forming tool, which is slowly rotated and moved in 3D space against the workpiece. The movement is controlled by a CNC milling machine. The force between the tool and the sheet metal workpiece, clamped onto a holder on the machine bed, causes local plastic deformation. The process enables a 3-Dimensional profile to be made by progressively moving the tool against the work piece in a spiral pattern, without cutting. Several sample of parts have already been produced.Arising from informal discussions and presentation about the project it has become apparent that there is a small number of other international researchers looking at various forms of this innovative process.Funding of 5,950 is requested from EPSRC to support a workshop of internationally leading researchers who are all engaged in researching different aspects of the process. The proposed workshop is aimed at maintaining the Bath IMRC as a major international player in the development of this process.
