The aim of this visiting fellowship is to further develop a theoretical model capable of explaining the main features of exchange bias, i.e. the shift of the hysteresis loop and the increase in the coercivity. The details of the model will involve an explanation of domain wall nucleation and propagation in both the antiferromagnetic (AF) and ferromagnetic (F) layers. The secondary aim is to closely connect theory and experiment by Professor Stamps working in two of the UK's premier laboratories who have considerable experience in studying exchange bias. We shall explore these effects experimentally using conventional AF/F bilayers but additionally we shall explore, for the first time, the frustration effects in a novel system. The use if of a spin glass/F bilayer for studying magnetic frustration has been proposed in the past but not yet studied. We shall use CuMn, a well known spin glass, to address the question of whether the magnetic frustration observed in spin glasses will generate similar biasing effects to AF layers when placed in contact with a F layer. Samples will be made in Leeds and subjected to magnetometry (VSM) and structural characterisation before being sent to Glasgow for magnetic characterisation by Lorentz microscopy.
