This proposal is to invite Dr H M Tutuncu from Sakarya University, Turkey for one month during the summer of 2004 to complete our on-going theoretical work on surface phonon calculations, and to set up future collaborative projects. In particular, we plan to complete phonon calculations for the alphaSn(001)-(2x1) surface by employing the bond charge model, and to establish the validity of this phenomenological model by comparing results with the ab-intio work carried out last summer with the help of the EPSRC grant GR/R97665/01. We also aim to complete calculations of phonon modes for the As-covered Si(001)-(2x1) surface, as well as a Se-covered InP(110) surface. The results for these systems will be analysed and compiled for presentation at conferences in 2004 and for publication in journals.
