Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal seeks to develop synthetic routes to, and the chemistry of, a novel class of transition metal cluster compound based high hydride content octahedra: [(PR3)6Rh6H12]2+. These compounds neatly span two disparate areas of duster chemistry, that of the late transition metals and that of the early transition metals. The development of the chemistry of these systems will thus have impact on the following areas: catalysis (homogeneous and heterogeneous), structure and bonding (new structural motifs in cluster chemistry) and hydrogen storage (reversible dihydrogen addition/removal). The structural aspects of these complexes will also be investigated by neutron diffraction techniques (location of hydride ligands) and EXAFS (solution-state structure).
