The shape of 21 st Century air travel is changing as aircraft designers seek new ways to make airliners larger, faster, quieter and more environmentally-friendly than ever before. For example, the day when the loudest vehicles at the airport are the buses may not be so far away thanks to research carried out in the UK, and worldwide, to get rid of aircraft noise. Can you meet the challenge?The University of Southampton is teaming up with Airbus UK, BAE SYSTEMS, INTECH Science Centre, Microsoft, the Campaign to Promote Engineering, the Greener by Design consortium, the Royal Aeronautical Society, and the Society of British Aerospace Companies to host a UK-wide schools competition to design the Airliner of the Future. Using a unique web based design system, entrants will be able to follow a step-by-step design process to come up with their own solutions for a 400seat subsonic airliner and a 200-seat supersonic airliner for 2050. Balancing the engineering, environmental and economic factors faced by the designers of today, and particularly tomorrow, is the key. The aircraft can be custom-painted and you can see if it really works in Microsoft Flight Simulator. The national final fly-off in the INTECH Flight Simulator will see a panel of expert judges pick the best designs. The web portal uses next-generation internet GRID and Web Services technology to provide ondemand computing, with the covers being peeled back so that students can learn about the future of web-based computing and develop their own killer apps.
