Summary on Grant Application Form |
This Platform Proposal from the 8 full-time academic members of the Cambridge University Geotechnical Group capitalises on two streams of resources - EPSRC project grants and industry research contracts worth over 1 M p.a, and about 10 PhD students who join the group every year holding their own 3-year scholarships adding value of about 0.6M p. a. These streams provide sufficient equipment and manpower to deliver on specific project objectives, but we can benefit from additional coordination. We will use the additional 100k p.a. from the Platform Grant to establish three initiatives - Strategic Technology in Geotechnical Modelling (StraTeGeM), Geo-Mechanics from Micro to Macro (GM3), and Achieving Timely Impact (ATI). StraTeGeM will help us advance the art of physical modelling in geotechnics, which is the focus of our Centre for Geotechnical Process and Construction Modelling, requiring 3 posts for existing team members. GM3 is a promising initiative to bridge the particle-continuum duality in soil mechanics, and we will organise an invited International Workshop and develop a corresponding UK interest group. ATI will enable us to achieve timely impact from research through cross-fertilisation between industry sectors, the integration of theoretical and experimental studies, and the creation of short advanced courses for industry.
