Summary on Grant Application Form |
It is possible to oxidise alkenes such as styrene over supported Au nanocrystals with high selectivity and activity using air as the oxidant in the presence of only catalytic amounts of a radical initiator. Oxygen availability is important in determining activity/selectivity. The chemistry will be built on and modified as necessary to allow its transfer to specialised structured reactors to maximise mass transfer and enable oxygen mapping and the gathering of kinetic data. The application of Johnson Matthey technology for catalyst immobilisation is a key factor in this process. Reference will be made to existing catalysts. Also, we intend to extend the scope of reactions studied to include hydrogeneration; the project as a whole will encompass redox reactions over supported Au catalysts in structured reactors for gas and liquid phase applications.
