Describe the proposed research using (about 200) words geared to the non-specialist reader.EPSRC is asked to provide support for a series of high-level international research workshops at the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences, Edinburgh (ICMS).Workshops and symposia are of great importance to the mathematical sciences community. The opporuntity to interact at such meetings is essential if the subect is to flourish and develop in new directions. Workshop activity is of particular importance to mathematical sciences because:(i) The individual research communitites can be very small and spread over many locations worldwide.(ii) Face-to-face interaction is by far the most effective method of developing interdisciplinary research projects.(ii) For younger researchers, the opportunity for personal encounters with world-class scientists is invaluable to their future research careers.ICMS proposes to organise a series of workshops over a four year period 2005-2008. The majority of the funding requested is to cover a proportion of the direct costs (travel and subsistence) of many of the participants at ICMS Workshops. EPSRC is also asked to contribute towards the costs of the administration involved in generating and assessing proposals and in organising workshops. The parent Universities of ICMS (Heriot-Watt and Edinburgh) and the Scottish Higher Educational Funding Council will provide significant infra-structural support.The core of the ICMS programme will be moderately-sized, focussed workshops on topics of current interest. ICMS will hold around 32 such meetings over the four-year period. The majority will be held within 8 to 12 months of a proposal being accepted and will be held in the India Street headquarters of ICMS. Some meetings (such as instructional ones) will be larger, have a rather longer planning time and will be held at other venues in Edinburgh.
