Summary on Grant Application Form |
A Network will be established to link the creative arts and scientific ceramics communities. It will be based initially on 14 independent artists/creative arts academics, 9 galleries, research and craft organisations, 2 industrial partners and 8 science based academic groups. This represents 33 separate individuals/institutions/companies with complementary skills, interests, facilities and expertise. The initial framework for the Network will be based on four broad themes: (i) Materials Investigations (Analysis of current and emerging materials and material combinations), (ii) Heat treatment (including fast firing techniques; use of microwave heating; durability during vapour glazing; annealing large scale glass sculpture, temporary kiln structures for large scale creative endeavours), (iii) Colour in ceramics (including novel glazes and firing regimes; control of colour by microstructure and texture), (iv) Surface Finish (including finishing techniques and the impact of new technologies, ie cutting, grinding and polishing, laser marking and waterbased transfer explorations). A Management Committee will be established to organise and monitor the scientific/artistic activities. Over the two year period, the committee will organise 3 major meetings and a series of small focussed workshops. It will also (i) help to define the themes of collaborative projects, (ii) assist with student exchange/placements/visits, (iii) establish links with national and international organisations. A secretary/administrator will handle the day to day running of the Network and be responsible for communications via a newsletter and web page. The Network will provide increased opportunities for joint projects and initiation of novel research programmes.
