Summary on Grant Application Form
A new in vitro models will be developed to enable the study of cotact vibration of ultrasonic scalers to be measured using Scanning Laser Vibrometry (SLV). The vibration patterns and modes of oscillation in different classes of dental vibratory instruments when operating on the tooth surface will be established using SLV. The magnetic properties of new magnetostricitve materials which may be suitable for an improved clinical ultrasonic scaler, will be measured and the design of a new magnetic assembly will be optimised based on both computer aided predictions before evaluation with the tooth model and SLV. An existing grouping of clinicians who have an active interest in the use of ultrasound for dentistry will be established and act as a think tank for the continued development of the instrument.Information gained from the research will be disseminated via a website and linked to other existing EPSRC networks. It is anticipated that the final product and understanding will be suitable for exploitation by the setting up a UK company to manufacture a new range of instruments.
