Summary on Grant Application Form |
This research focuses on the relationship between pupils' health, well-being and performance, and the indoor air quality in classrooms of Southern England. Field surveys will be carried out at twenty different primary and secondary school buildings located in city and suburban areas during a full academic year. Physical measurement sof the indoor and outdoor environment will be carried out in each school through the measurement of C02, air temperature, air velocity, humidity and particulates concentration. These will be performed under minimum and maximum ventilation rates. Parallel to the physical environmental measurements, each pupil selected for the study will be asked to carry out performance tests (e.g. of reaction time) and to complete questionnaires about their working environment and their current health experiences. Statistical analyses will be performed using the pupils' responses to establish relationships between the various environmental parameters and measures of pupils' performance, experience of symptoms and perception of environment. The results will be used to assess the suitability of current ventilation rates for classrooms and to develop new guidelines for the ventilation of school buildings in the UK.
