Summary on Grant Application Form
A laboratory facility representing a plane beach will be used and both a longshore current and waves, orthogonal to the coastline, will be generated. Under these hydraulic conditions, typical of open coastlines, a series of experiments will be performed where both the wave and hydrodynamic flow field will be measured. These measurements will quantify the spatial variations of the wave height and the turbulent velocity fluctuations. These detailed hydrodynamic studies will be combined with soluble tracer studies to simulate the mixing of pollutants in the nearshore zone. A fluorescent tracer will be introduced into the flow field and its movement and spread measured using both discrete sampling and image processing techniques. A range of wave conditions will be investigated, including regular waves, at different wave periods and random waves, where the wave properties vary. The magnitude of the mixing coefficients will be related to both the wave conditions and the properties of hydrodynamic flow field. This will allow the development of mathematical techniques capable of describing the mixing effects. This information can be used by scientists to improve the prediction of water quality processes in the nearshore zone.
