Nowadays, the standard approach in Engineering design for the issues of prototyping and validation is largely conducted, for economic reasons, using computational modelling. The most commonly used modelling tool is arguably the Finite-Element (FE) method. Such a reliance on computer simulation raises the problem of the robustness of the modelling process to the presence of uncertainty, which will undoubtedly be present in the physical situation. Uncertainty may arise through variable material properties, geometric parameters, loading and boundary conditions amongst other causes. In safetycritical situations (and many other non-critical areas) it is clearly desirable to be able to predict the worst-case outcome.This proposal seeks to develop methods which are capable of returning bounds on the reponse of complex structures which are prone to uncertainty. As computational running time of these methods is very important, the project will make use of recent arithmetic techniques to investigate many models with different parameters with a single run of the model. The main applications investigated in the project are aimed at reducing computation time for the slowest types of model and investigating the effect of variability in the thickness of spray-on coatings designed to reduce vibration in structures.
