Over ten times more concrete is produced than all other construction materials put together, some 6 billion m3/year. The premature deterioration of concrete structures is a major and growing world-wide problem and in most developed countries, including the UK, around half of the construction budget is devoted to repair and maintenance. Demands for enhanced technical performance, safety, economics and environmental protection create an increasingly pressing need to be able to design structures to have the required life and to accurately assess the residual lives of existing structures, with and without repair. The Concrete Durability Group at Imperial College aims to improve understanding of material behaviour and to model deterioration to enable more effective design, assessment and repair of concrete structures. The aim of this Platform Grant is to assist with staffing costs and travel funds for the Group to further develop its position as an internationally leading research group in this area. The main thrust of the Group's work for the next five years will be service life prediction. The objective is that by 2012, a set of reliable service life models will have been developed covering the main deterioration mechanisms and exposure scenarios, and applicable to both existing and new structures. This will be facilitated by a new strand of research on non-destructive monitoring and will be complemented by adventurous studies concerning the development of more durable materials.
