Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is concerned with understanding the complex behaviour of cable-stayed bridges when subject to dynamic loads, such as wind or seismic excitation. A particular issue is the nonlinear interaction between local cable vibrations and bridge deck vibrations, which can lead to very large cable vibrations or significantly increased amplitudes of deck vibrations. These can in turn lead to overstressing of structural components, fatigue damage or user discomfort. The dynamic interactions are highly sensitive to detailed nonlinear cable behaviour, including bending, end effects and damping. These effects will first be studied experimentally on large-scale inclined cables. The uniqueness of this work is that cable-deck interaction will then be investigated using the new testing technique of real-time dynamic substructuring, with a physical cable coupled to a numerical model of the bridge deck. This method will enable interaction tests to be conducted over a large range of parameters, identifying critical and optimum regions of performance for the structure. In parallel with the experimental testing, a programme of mathematical modelling will be carried out using the latest techniques from dynamical systems theory, including bifurcation analysis. These models will be tested and validated against the experimental results to give new tools for assessing the dynamic behaviour of cable-stayed bridges and other cable structures.
