Summary on Grant Application Form
The work in the automatic layout of Euler diagrams has only just begun, and has been initiated independently by two teams, one in the UK, and the other in Canada. The exchange visits proposed here are designed to facilitate communication and collaboration between the two teams. One team, from the Universities of Kent and Brighton in UK, consists of researchers on the current Reasoning with Diagrams project [GR/R63509, GR/R63516], who have taken an approach based on graph drawing techniques. The other team, in Combinatorial Algorithms Group, University of Victoria, Canada have taken an approach based on Venn diagram drawing techniques. This proposal is for Stirling Chow to travel to the UK for 1 month as a visiting researcher and for two members of the UK team to visit Canada for shorter periods of time. This will result in important information exchange about the relevant techniques, start the work in combining the best of both work, and result in further collaboration.
