When light passes through human tissue, differences in its attenuation occur which depend on the amount of blood and the degree of oxygenation. This fact has motivated researchers to develop new instruments for monitoring the distribution of oxygen and blood within tissues using measurements of transmitted or reflected light. The UCL group is the largest working in this area in Europe, and its research is focussed primarily on studying blood flow, oxygenation, and tissue metabolism in the brain and breast. This proposal for platform support encompasses work in three broad areas: optical spectroscopy (which enables clinically-valuable data to be derived from isolated regions within a centimetre or two of the tissue surface), optical imaging (which involves 2D mapping of physiological variables near the surface, or generating 3D images of whole organs), and photoacoustic methods (which use sound waves generated by pulses of light to acquire information at high spatial resolution). Unlike a project grant, which requests funding for a specific project, this platform grant application seeks salary support for a core group of four individuals whose skills and expertise have a substantial impact on all the groups activities. This will enable the group to increasingly explore new and exciting ideas and carry out feasibility studies in a wide variety of areas. We request a total of approximately 400,000 to provide salary support, as required, over a five-year period.
