Summary on Grant Application Form |
Ion beam analysis enables elemental, and in some cases isotopic depth profiling of solid materials. In essence, a beam of highly energetic ions is accelerated onto a target, and subsequent analysis of the energy spectrum of recoiling particles yields information on elemental composition versus depth. The accelerator in the chemistry department of Durham serves a wide range of users from solid state chemistry to polymer physical chemistry, physics engineering, and archaeology. We propose to carry out two developments to the current apparatus to increase the range of applications to which it is currently suited. Firstly, we propose to modify the source of the ion beam accelerator in such a way that it can produce beams of hydrogen or oxygen in addition to the currently available 3He and 4He without compromising its current capability. The second development is to the endstation of the accelerator where the samples are placed. A dedicated transmission mode detector will be installed which will enable the detection of forward scattered particles in the range 0 - 20 . Furthermore a series of sample frames will be constructed to be compatible with the existing sample mount, which will permit transmission mode elastic recoil detection analysis experiments.
