Summary on Grant Application Form |
We will deploy the computer software required for use of computational resources (computers, databases, advanced devices such as microscopes etc) across the internet. The Software deployed and supported will allow users to access a wide range of these resources using the same basic methods and will, hence, allow coordinated use of these different facilities. For example, from an apparently standard web page one could submit a complicated computer calculation, perhaps simulating a jet engine, to a large supercomputer. The output data from this calculation could then be stored automatically in a data base at a different site. This data could then be further processed on a third site, using some advanced computer graphics software, and the output displayed back on your own desktop. The fact that these different facilities used are at different sites should be completely hidden from the end user, who only sees a set of services which he or she can use as required, provided that the user has the appropriate permissions or authority. It should eventually be equally straightforward to integrate this sort of computer generated information with data from real experiments. Extending the example above, it should be possible, from the same web interface, to compare the data from the computer simulation with data from a real aircraft engine, situated in a research laboratory, or active on a working aircraft.
