Optical tomography is an emerging medical imaging modality in which 3D images of blood volume and oxygenation are generated. We have recently demonstrated its ability to image haemorrhage and physiological changes in the neonatal brain. The technique suffers from limited spatial resolution due to the high degree of scatter in tissue.The Principle Investigator holds an EPSRC Advanced Research Fellowship during which he will combine the unique ability of optical tomography to provide images of brain function with the excellent spatial resolution of magnetic resonance imaging. We request funding for a programme of work which will support the Fellowship by developing new experimental and theoretical approaches which will exploit a second-generation optical tomography system, and obtain clinical results which will direct the development of optical tomography both as a stand-alone imaging technique and as part of a multi-modality imaging system.The outcome of the programme of work will be a portable instrument which can acquire quantitatively accurate images of brain function at the cotside, potentially leading to new approaches to brain-oriented neonatal intensive care.
