Summary on Grant Application Form |
EPSRC funded research on Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Vapour Deposition (APCVD) prepared Metal Doped Vanadium Oxide thin films has led to the development of novel thermo-chromic thin-films that are able to change their reflectance-transmission properties with external temperature. Initial experimental results when the films were coated onto glass, has suggested that they provide the basis of an intelligent window coating. This is because above a switching temperature, the deposited films show a significant (i.e. 30-40%) increase in reflectance, whilst below the switching temperature the films are transparent and let in full spectrum sunlight. Importantly the switching temperature can be set through deposition process parameters and choice of precursors. Patent protection on the underlying Intellectual Property has been sought and the UCL team now seeks follow on funding to develop an optimized and robust thermo-chromic film. Such a film is needed if meaningful market-testing is to be undertaken with a wide range of glass manufacturers and thus enable a licensing arrangement to be achieved.
