Summary on Grant Application Form |
Spatial and temporal observations at nano- and micro-scales for energy and engineering research are key to progress world-class work led by the University of Bristol (UoB) - together with the University of Oxford and its GW4 partners (Bath, Cardiff, Exeter) - into nuclear and material challenges. An X-ray tomography (XRT) instrument able to observe in-situ experiments on a scale previously reserved for synchrotron work and the capability to work with radioactive materials opens up fields of research that are of great interest to academia and industry at a level that returns the UK to the international top table of nuclear materials research. Advanced X-ray tomography works by illuminating a specimen with a known X-ray energy, imaging the transmission through 180 degrees and reconstructing the data to give a truly 4D representation of a material with internal and external feature development throughout in-situ testing. Instrumentation of this capability would be of interest to a multitude of fields of research, the support for which can be managed by the UoB Interface Analysis Centre, a regional materials analysis hub with a strong track record and experience in providing cutting-edge analysis for a multitude of different academic and industrial groups. This proposal addresses analytical XRT capacity and suitability issues by replacing out-moded UoB facilities (>10 years old) and establishing a new centralised capability in a dedicated technical centre.
