Computer graphics is at the heart of 'virtual reality'- one of the most exciting recent developments in human-computer interaction. Increasingly contradictory demands are being made on computer graphics, especially in the virtual reality applications context: display images of 3D scenes with response in real-time to the actions of a human participant, and make the rendering quality as close to realism as possible. For example, in architectural walkthrough applications, the displayed lighting must look right, and be accurate. In entertainment applications, such as the production of animations, the demand for visual realism is so great that the animation frames must be produced 'off-line'. This research introduces a new paradigm for computer graphics, one which seamlessly integrates the demand for real-time performance and the display of images that are realistic in terms of scene lighting. This is basic research, and it is strategic in terms of EPSRC themes such as the LINK Broadcast Technology Programme. It will stimulate further research within the UK on computer graphics and virtual environments, with the knock-on effect of producing more postgraduate training opportunities. The application areas are multifarious, since 3D computer graphics plays a central role in many existing and developing technologies, ranging from virtual rehearsals through to digital TV.
