Summary on Grant Application Form |
Polymers with side chains based on the tetrabenzotriazaporphyrin (TBTAP) macrocycle will be synthesised. TBTAP is identical to the much studied phthalocyanine ring system, known to have exciting electro-optical properties, except that a carbon replaces a nitrogen at a single meso-site. The applicant found, recently, that this meso carbon can be used as an additional site for alkyl substitution, thus providing a useful route to asymmetric phthalocyanine-like macrocycles. It is intended to attach polymerisable groups to this meso-site to facilitate the synthesis of the side chain polymers Peripheral alkyl substitution of the TBTAP sub-units is expected to result in polymers which form discotic liquid crystals. It is intended to control the liquid crystal properties of these TBTAP polymers by careful choice of polymer backbone, linking group, peripheral TBTAP substitution and metal ion placed within the central cavity of the TBTAP. In addition, it is proposed to prepare side chain TBTAP polymers with hydrophilic polymer backbones. Such amphiphilic polymers are expected to be excellent Langmuir-Blodgett film forming materials, combining a well ordered structure with the stability associated with films derived from preformed polymers. Their electro-optical properties will be studied in the work.
