Summary on Grant Application Form
The project will evaluate the use of the citrate gel process for the production of low loss soft ferrites of the MnZn and MgZn types in particular. The process will be used to add both impurity elements and additives to the ferrites in a chemically homogeneous manner. The sintering of the powders will be studied and microstructural investigations of sintered powders will be related to magnetic properties so that the effects grain size, porosity and addition agents may be understood. Magnetic evaluation will consist of measurements of initial permeability over a range of temperatures, power loss measurements over frequencies 16-128 kHz and 50-100 mT in the temperature range 25-125C and the determination of B-H loops. The possible scale up of the gel precursor decomposition process will be evaluated using a laboratory scale vertical reactor with vibrating sample feed.
