The objectives of this research programme are:a) to optimise the material parameters required to produce efficient waveguide lasers,b) to develop efficient dry etching processesc) demonstrate integrated rare-earth doped silica waveguide lasers andd) investigate transparent optical circuits.Progress:The initial phase of the project concentrated on developing passive material parameters and assessing the pros and cons of the solution doping technique compared with an aerosol doping technique. Detailed experimental investigations have been carried out into assessing the propagation loss, doping concentration, co-doping species and fluorescence lifetimes of rare earth doped silica. To date work has concentrated on Er and Nd doped waveguides. We have reported waveguide lasers results in both solution doped [1] and aerosol doped [2] planar silica. We are also investigating etching processes, in order to develop a high speed, low damage process. Initial results on selective area doping, both in the vertical and horizontal directions has been reported [3]. This work is continuing with the aim of producing integrated optoelectronic circuits with both active and passive components on a single substrate. Papers:1. J.R. Bonar, J.A Bebbington, J.S.
