Summary on Grant Application Form |
The Materials Science Department recently acquired a JEOL 2000EX HREM from BP Research Labs (Sunbury). This instrument had previously accommodated a purpose built ex-situ gas reaction cell for catalyst studies. BP have generously given this reaction cell to Liverpool to complement our ongoing catalyst research programme. In this proposal we request funds which would allow us to buy some additional items of equipment which are necessary in order to make full use of the facility. Once the cell is commissioned, we will use it to study a number of commercially important catalyst systems. Complimentary studies using our VG HB601 STEM and the numerous techniques available in the Leverhulme Catalysis Centre should allow us to make important correlations between morphology and catalyst performance. The systems which we have identified as being suitable for such studies are as follows:i) Pt/Cr alloy catalysts (for gasoline reforming)ii) Rh/Al2O3 and other catalysts (for synthesis gas reactions)iii) Metal/oxide (eg Au/MgO) catalysts (for low temperature CO oxidation)iv) Shear structures in Bi2O3, MoO3 and Bi2MoO6 oxidation catalysts
