Summary on Grant Application Form |
STM and AFM will be used in situ to measure the nanometre-scale topography during and after anodic passivation of alloys in aqueous electrolytes. Atomic resolution will be obtained on some of these surfaces in situ, and routinely in air with STM. This research will focus on specific atomistic models of passivation and reactivation processes, eg cluster structure and Cr2O3 glass formation. Spinodal decomposition and incorporation of noble metals are also planned. The AFM will also be used to study critical issues relating to anodized and air-formed oxides on aluminium, complementing other high- resolution techniques such as analytical TEM. Specimen preparation techniques will include magnetron sputtering, ion-assisted ion-beam sputter deposition, and annealing of bulk materials with reactive metal powders.
