Summary on Grant Application Form
Current practice in the modelling of engine flow and combustion makes use of first-moment and first-order numerical methods. Recent advances in the modelling of turbulent flow and turbulent combustion have led to represent the physics of turbulent reacting flow. Recent advances in numerical methods have made possible the highly desirable combination of second order accuracy and guaranteed boundedness of solutions. The purpose of the proposed research is to combine second-moment turbulent combustion modelling with a second-order numerical scheme in the context of spark-ignition engine combustion. Existing codes will be used wherever possible as a basis for the work and the experience of the principal applicants in their respective areas of engine flow modelling (APW) and turbulent combustion modelling (RSC) will be used to best advantage in the proposed combination of their research efforts. It is envisaged that the implementation and initial testing of the new modelling and numerical method will require the full time efforts of a postdoctoral research assistant for about half the three-year grant period with the remainder given over to validation using available experimental data.
