Summary on Grant Application Form |
This collaboration of three universities and five companies aims to perform a comprehensive investigation into surface and interface roughness and sub-surface damage in brittle materials, prepared by a variety of nanotechnological fabrication processes. Several hundred specimens will be examined, of silicon, glass and ceramic materials. X-ray, optical, acoustic and mechanical methods of assessment will be used. The project should result in vastly improved understanding of the effect of fabrication processes on the surface structure of materials for nanotechnology, of greatly improved and better understood characterisation methods, and the specification of quality control instruments and methods.
