Summary on Grant Application Form
The main objective of the work is to provide experimental data for the validation and development of fluid dynamics and combustion computer codes. To this end a Ricardo Hydra single-cylinder high-speed direct injection diesel engine will be modified to supplement the existing optical access through the piston with facilities for viewing downwards through the cylinder head, illuminating the combustion zone with laser light sheets and admitting a gas sampling probe to the combustion chamber. The combustion chamber designed will incorporate the most modern design practice. High speed cine photography will be used in conjunction with particle image velocimetry, schlieren optics, image analysis and the two colour method of temperature measurement for studying conditions in the cylinder before and after combustion. Finally, gas samples will be snatched from the combustion chamber for analysis. In a separate but convergent strand of the activity computer codes existing at UMIST will be applied to the prediction of in-cylinder air flow, fuel injection and combustion processes in the engine and the results compared with those derived from experiment.
